Weston Hospicecare, one of North Somerset's biggest charities, is saying a big thank you to everybody who supported their appeal for furniture donations in the autumn which helped to raise several  thousands of pounds for the charity.

At the end of last summer donations of furniture for the charity to sell on in their shops had dropped off dramatically, prompting real concern at the hospice that a vital source of income could be lost and that future funding could be hit as a result.

But thanks to the public appeal the donations started to come in again and the collection drivers were busier than ever throughout the autumn helping to boost funding for the hospice which provides free palliative care and support for about 1,100 people with life-limiting illnesses each year, and support to their families, in North Somerset and neighbouring parts of Somerset.

Now the charity is again calling on people in Weston-super-Mare and surrounding areas, to think of their local charity when they are having a new year clear out and may be letting go of some furniture.

Peter Boyer, retail controller for Weston Hospicecare, said: "We had a great response in the autumn to our appeal which saw a lot of good quality furniture being donated, but we really need to appeal again to people in Weston and the surrounding area to give us a call if they are looking for a good home for furniture they no longer need.

"Our drivers will pick up items for free within North Somerset and neighbouring parts of Somerset, and people know that the furniture will be going to benefit a charity that has been serving this community for the past 20 years.

"We are looking for furniture in general, tables, wardrobes, sofas, beds etc, and greatly appreciate any donations. But we also need to be able to sell them on in order to raise money for the charity so they need to be of a certain standard.

"The best thing to do is give us a call and tell us what you've got."

Demand for second-hand furniture in the charity's shops has been high due in part to the recession, but at the same time there has been a reduction in the amount of furniture being donated as people were not buying as many new items. But it is hoped that the recovery of the economy may lead to more donations.

Weston Hospicecare furniture shops in High Street Worle, and Devonshire Road in Weston, are well established and people can be sure that every penny made from the sale of their donated furniture goes directly to the Hospice and funding its services.
