The wheel on the beach lawns in Weston-super-Mare was a stunning sight last weekend as it was flood lit pink to launch registrations for the annual Weston Hospicecare Midnight Beach Walk which is taking place on Saturday 18th September. From dusk until dawn Thursday to Sunday the wheel stood proudly on the sea front glowing pink to support the walk.
On Friday morning Gill Blackshaw, Director of Nursing from Weston Hospicecare, together with the ladies from Howards Group who sponsor the Midnight Beach Walk and supporters from Weston-super-Mare golf club all dressed in pink and wore bunny ears to take a ride in a capsule on the wheel filled with pink balloons to celebrate the launch of the event. The fundraising team from Weston Hospicecare then spent a very successful day in the town recruiting walkers ready for September.
Sue Sweet who is organising the event at Weston Hospicecare said “We had a great day on Friday recruiting walkers for the event - Great City Attractions who own the wheel have been fantastic in allowing us to use the wheel to create awareness for the event. The walk is a big event in the Hospice calendar and we hope this year will be our biggest yet. Whether you want to walk in memory of a loved one or just want to do something for your local Hospice it’s a great way to raise funds and have a good time sharing a wonderful experience with other local women. If you would like to take part on the night please do contact us on 01934 423960 but hurry as spaces are getting booked up fast!”
The wheel is the start of many attractions and icons around the area going pink this summer to raise awareness for the walk which is one of Weston’s biggest fundraising events. Weston Hospicecare is expecting over 1200 local women to take part to help raise over £90,000 which will help them on their way to meet the £3million a year running cost of the Hospice of which only 20% is funded by the NHS.
Ammar from Great City Attractions said “We are delighted to be helping Weston Hospicecare. We have been an integral part of the Weston-super-Mare community now for 2 years and it’s great to be able to get involved and help the Hospice to promote this fantastic event.”
Rachel who works at Asda in Weston-super-Mare saw the wheel on Thursday evening “The wheel is part of the furniture in Weston’s town centre so when I drove past it last night and it was lit up pink it was a bit of a shock – It looked stunning and very eye-catching. My daughters and I wondered why it was pink, it wasn’t until I saw the Weston Hospicecare team on the beach lawns today signing people up to the walk that I realised what it was in aid of. We will definitely be entering a team and we may even call ourselves ‘The Asda George girls!”
Look out for clues in the Weston Mercury for other icons turning pink this summer! |
