Our volunteers take on a wide variety of roles here at Weston Hospicecare, and we’re currently looking to build our team of Companions.

Being a Companion is a very valued and important role at Weston Hospicecare, offering emotional support to patients and those in a caring role. Being a Companion requires a gentle approach, where good listening skills are the primary requirement. Companion support is not counselling and it is essential that Companions stay within the boundaries of the support being offered, but imagine how much that time could mean to someone with a life-limiting illness. Spending time with patients, whether that’s sitting and chatting, or completing a jigsaw together, is something that proves beneficial on all sides; our patients appreciate the opportunity to talk candidly about how they are feeling, and to discuss their emotional and physical struggles with an impartial, friendly face. The time a Companion spends with a patient also allows their primary care-giver to take a much needed break sometimes.

Our Companions need to be empathetic, a good listener, and non-judgmental. You should also be flexible and have access to your own transport. It goes without saying that you need to be friendly and approachable; we pride ourselves on being a friendly bunch here at Weston Hospicecare. A good sense of humour is also desirable; you’d be surprised at how many laughs we share with our patients!

Full training is given for this role, in the form of a 4 week training plan (once weekly sessions) and ongoing support and supervision. If you enjoy spending time with others, and meeting new people, this could well be the role for you, and you can offer whatever amount of time suits. Being a Companion gives you an opportunity to give something back to the community, while also honing and learning some desirable skills. We’d love to hear from you if you’re interested; you can call us on 01934 423975, or email volunteer@westonhospicecare.org.uk

    Reclaim Gift Aid

Gift Aid It!Add 25% more to your donation at no cost to you. A Gift Aid declaration allows Weston Hospicecare to claim tax back on eligible donations. It means that for every £1 you donate to Weston Hospicecare we can claim back 25p from the government.

By ticking the "Yes" box, I agree I would like Weston Hospicecare to reclaim the tax on all qualifying donations I have made, as well as any future donations, until I notify them otherwise. I understand that if I pay less Income Tax and/or Capital Gains Tax than the amount of Gift Aid claimed on all my donations in that tax year I may be asked to pay any difference. I understand that Weston Hospicecare will reclaim 25p of tax on every £1 that I give.

    What is Gift Aid?

Gift Aid does not cost you a penny more, but can add an additional 25p to every £1 you donate. When Weston Hospicecare receives a donation from a UK taxpayer, we're entitled to claim an amount of tax (calculated at the basic rate of income tax in that year) paid on that donation. Once you have given your permission for us to do this on your behalf, there is no need for you to do anything else.

All that is required is that you must be a taxpayer and that would have paid or will pay sufficient Income and/or Capital Gains Tax to cover all the Gift Aid claimed on all your donations in that tax year. Please note that it is your responsibility to pay any difference.

The amount of tax we claim will be 25% of the total value of your donations in that tax year. Furthermore, if you are a higher taxpayer, you are also entitled to claim the difference between the basic rate which we will claim and the amount of tax you have actually paid. For further details on how you can do this, please contact your tax office. If your tax situation changes and your gifts will no longer be eligible for the Gift Aid scheme please contact us and we will amend your record accordingly.
