Ten plucky teams battled it out over inflatable obstacles and foam pits in a contest to be crowned Weston Hospicecare’s inaugural It’s A Hospice Knockout! champions at the weekend.
The event – sponsored by Nightingale Property and Removals – was the first of its kind, and was held alongside a family fun day in Weston’s Clarence Park on Saturday.
Teams from the likes of Slimming World, Sweet Result Fitness, the Grand Pier, the hospice and others locked horns in a series of fun games which tested both their physical prowess and mental ingenuity.
Spectators cheered as the teams donned fancy dress ranging from superheroes to Tellytubbies before clambering over the obstacles in a series of close-fought challenges.
After six different games, the top four teams made it through to the final – before the Grand Pier team emerged victorious.
Team spokesman Hollie Otley, who is the pier’s event manager, said: “We are absolutely delighted that the Pier Pressure team won It’s A Hospice Knockout! I would like to say we trained for months in preparation but that wasn’t the case – we were just very determined and a little competitive.
“The event was well organised from start to finish, and we would like to say a huge thank you to Weston Hospicecare for putting on such a great event that was enjoyed by all the spectators as much as the competitors I am sure.
“The Grand Pier is proud to support the hospice and all the good work it does for the local community – thanks for making it so easy to do so with such fun events to get involved with.
“We will certainly be contending next year to defend our title as the reigning champions of It’s A Hospice Knockout!”
Visitors were also able to try their luck in at games stalls, get their faces painted, and test their nerve on some attractions on loan from Funland, which recently completed its summer at the Tropicana.
It is too early to say how much money was raised as sponsorship is still being collected by the teams, but event organiser Kelsey Dehaney said the day had been a big success.
She said: “It was our first It’s A Hospice Knockout! and we are really pleased with how it went.
“It was so good – really fun, really entertaining, and it’s clear from the early feedback that our teams had as much fun as we did watching them.
“We would like to say a huge thank you to everyone who took part, everyone who sponsored them, all those who came along on the day, and our volunteers and helpers who worked to make the day such a success.
“Big thanks also to our sponsors from Nightingales, whose support made a big difference and was very much appreciated.
“We will let everyone know the total raised once it has all been added up, but we can already say that the money raised will go towards supporting our work caring for patients from across Weston and beyond.”
