Last December, hospice supporter Cam Milkins set off on an ambitious challenge to run 5km every single day for a year.
He is nearing the completion of the challenge where he is raising funds for Weston Hospicecare.
But why is he doing it? Here’s a few words from Cam…
“I set myself the challenge of running at least 5km everyday for 365 days. Within this challenge I have done other challenges such as running half marathons. By the end of the challenge in early December, I will have covered over 2000km. All of my runs are recorded on Strava and then posted onto my ‘Running Instagram Page’ which is called ‘5k365whc’.
“Firstly, I have loved it! Of course there have been some hard periods and individual runs, due to illness, slight injuries and general tiredness, but these have rarely lasted very long and I’ve been back loving it again. I have had tremendous support from friends and family who have joined me in around half of my runs, which has really kept me going on those tougher days. With about a month of the challenge to go, I am feeling as fresh as on day 1 and just enjoying the end of the challenge.
“I’ve decided to take on this fundraising challenge due to the sad passing of my best friend’s mum. I have been best friends with Con for over 20 years, and sadly in August 2020, Nicki passed away after a long, brave battle with illness. She was very much a part of my life growing up and Con still very much is. So in memory of her, I wanted to raise money for Weston Hospicecare, where she spent the last few weeks of her life and I know everyone at the hospice made those weeks as comfortable for Nicki and the family as they could be. I just wanted to say thank you and give something back for the amazing work they did for some very important people to me.
“Proudness is not something that I’ve really thought about in terms of completing the challenge. It’s more something that others have said to me. Like I previously said, I’ve simply loved it and its the type of challenge I will most definitely do again.”
