This year, Weston Hospicecare is holding its first-ever abseil event in the rocky shadows of Uphill Quarry, which is just a short walk from the hospice itself. On Saturday, 15 July, more than 20 participants of varying ages and abilities will be abseiling down the 150-foot cliffs at Uphill Quarry to raise funds for the hospice.
‘At Weston Hospicecare, we’re all about helping people add life to days — whether we’re doing that for our patients and their loved ones or for our supporters and staff,’ said Rachel Smith, challenge fundraiser at Weston Hospicecare. ‘We’re lucky enough to be located right next to the quarry, so it makes sense to take advantage of the benefits that our area has to offer with this exciting new challenge.’
Local estate agents Bloxham & Barlow have signed on as sponsors of the event, and they also have members of staff taking part on the day and raising sponsorship.
‘We have helped raise funds for Weston Hospicecare for many years, and this is certainly the most daring event that staff members have volunteered to take part in,’ said Chris Bloxham, owner of Bloxham & Barlow Estate Agents. ‘It’s great to be part of this very worthy cause, and we want to say good luck to all of the participants!’
Mendip Outdoor Pursuits will be running the event, and they have the full safety training to make sure all participants, regardless of their level of experience, will have a safe and fun challenge day. As experts will be on hand to guide participants each step of the way, this thrilling and accessible event will give people a chance to tick off one of the common ‘bucket list’ options.
‘We’re hoping people will raise as much sponsorship as they can so we can continue our work with local people affected by life-limiting illness,’ Rachel said. ‘As we’ve asked each person to raise at least £100 each, we’re hoping this event will raise more than £2,000, which would be brilliant.’
