A senior nurse, who works in the emergency department at Weston General Hospital, has signed up with her daughter to take on the 30-mile Mendip Challenge route in aid of Weston Hospicecare.
Tanya Atwell, of Weston, will tackle the 30-mile route as part of team ED Superstars along with her daughter Elleanor, who is taking part as part of her Duke of Edinburgh award.
Tanya’s father was cared for by the hospice before he died after a battle with bowel cancer.
She said: “We decided to do the Mendip Challenge as the hospice is very close to our hearts.
“Sadly my dad died 12 weeks after being diagnosed with bowel cancer but the hospice staff were so lovely. We had support from the community nursing team prior to his stay in the inpatient unit.
“The hospice is essential to the area providing valued and needed support at the most crucial time in someone’s life. Not just for a patient but for their families too.
“This year I have a special birthday and I am supporting the hospice as a thank you for the care given to my dad and I am also taking part in the Brighton marathon in his honour but for another great charity.”
The Mendip Challenge is Weston Hospicecare’s flagship fundraising event that gives supporters an opportunity to complete 10, 20 or 30 miles across the stunning Mendip Hills following the West Mendip Way.
It costs £15 for adults and £10 for children to take part but this price covers the cost of putting on the event only. This means the hospice strongly encourages participants to raise sponsorship money on top to help make the event a financial success.
As participants finish, they will be greeted at event HQ by an after party and the hospice invites all participants, volunteers and family members to join hospice staff to celebrate participants finishing the challenge and the charity’s 30th anniversary year.
Those eager to take part must sign up before Sunday 26 May. Visit westonhospicecare.org.uk/mendip for more information about how to register.
