A Weston-super-Mare builder will join a group of friends and family by walking the Men’s March in memory of his sister-in-law this weekend – and you can still sign up to join him.
The Men’s March will take place for the first time this Saturday (9 March) and will start at Weston’s Grand Pier, before following a 10-mile route through Weston Woods to Sand Point, before returning.
Alex Hunter, aged 63, will walk with a group which will include his family members to support Weston Hospicecare’s first Men’s March in memory of Alison Adams.
He said: “My sister-in-law was treated at the hospice before she died in September last year.
“The whole family are very grateful for the care and compassion she and the whole family received and continue to receive.
“We feel this is a way of giving something back to a wonderful place. I will be walking with other members of the family in her memory.
“At such a difficult time in their lives, we will always be grateful for the hospice’s support.”
Those who have already signed up must check in with event staff between 11-11.45am at the Grand Pier on Saturday.
The walk will start at 12pm and takes in a safe, fully-marshalled route along a scenic stretch of the Somerset coastline.
Participants will be given a free pasty and pint of Thatchers Gold in a bespoke souvenir pint glass upon completion of the walk, before being offered the opportunity to watch England’s penultimate Six Nations fixture against Italy together on a big screen at the pier.
Although advance registration has now closed, there remains an opportunity for people to turn up and register on the day.
To do so, head to the pier between 11am and 12pm. It costs just £20 to sign up and take part, with money going to help Weston Hospicecare’s work caring for people with life-limiting illnesses.
The hospice must raise £4.2million every year to support the charity and only 20% of this is funded by the NHS. This means revenue generated through shops, donations and fundraising events, like the Men’s March are crucial.
