Expressive Movement Therapy

April 12, 2023
Lauren Easterbrook

Expressive Movement Therapy provides emotional, physical and spiritual support and relief to patients.  Sessions are led by an experienced Creative Arts Psychotherapist.  Expressive Movement Therapy works on the premise that our body, mind and spirit are integrated; how we are physically affects our mental health and our mental health affects our physical wellbeing.

A safe, non-judgmental and confidential environment allows patients to not only express themselves and their feelings through words, but also through movement and music.  Expressive Movement Therapy consists of a mixture of talking and dancing – dancing is interpreted creatively and expressed within one’s own means and ability.

The movement allows for transformation in posture, breath, tension and in doing so can shift emotional blockages, open up memories and encourage alternative ways of thinking.

Sessions are filled with laughter, joy, respect, reminiscence, honest sharing, and a strong sense of connection and belonging.  Worrying thoughts are relieved, tensions are released and the seriousness of illness diminished.  Patients become whole, not just focusing on their illness but what they can still achieve.

Sessions are patient led depending on their needs and requirements at the time with guidance from our Creative Arts Psychotherapist, Linsey.
