Supermarket team pledges birthday support for Weston Hospicecare

Supermarket Sainsbury’s has offered its support for Weston Hospicecare – with staff at the Worle store pledging hundreds of hours of volunteering time and fundraising support.

The Queensway store has adopted the hospice as its charity of the year, while also identifying the charity as its principle beneficiary of the chain’s 150 Days Of Community project.

This sees different Sainsbury’s stores around the UK selecting charities to benefit from 150 days’ worth of its workers’ time; participating employees are paid as normal, but spend a cumulative total of 150 days working for the nominated charities instead.

The team at Sainsbury’s voted to back Weston Hospicecare, and they have worked with hospice managers to identify a project they can devote time to; renovating an important storage area within the hospice headquarters at Jackson-Barstow House in Uphill.

Steve Kovacs, manager of Sainsbury’s Worle, said: “We’ve spent a century and a half being part of thousands of communities. Making a difference. Doing our bit.

“So what better way to celebrate our 150th birthday than by making more of a difference for our communities than ever before?

“Our birthday weekend marked the start of our 150 Days Of Community. We’ve pledged support for over 2,500 projects and we’ll all be making a difference and doing our bit for projects that have the biggest impact in our communities.

“Here at Worle Sainsbury’s we have chosen to support and work with Weston Hospicecare. So many of our colleagues and customers have had loved ones cared for at the hospice and want to give something back.

“From 26 May to 23October we will be volunteering at the hospice to make their external storage room beautiful and fit for purpose once again.

“We will be clearing, sanding, painting and organising with the hospice to make the room a bright light and easily accessible storage space.”

Sainsbury’s has also pledged in-store fundraising opportunities for the hospice, which will be gratefully received too.

Simon Angear, the hospice’s corporate fundraising manager, said: “We are grateful to the team at Sainsbury’s for choosing to support us through their 150 Days Of Community initiative.

“We look forward to forging new friendships within the team as we work with them on this important project in the months ahead.”

    Reclaim Gift Aid

Gift Aid It!Add 25% more to your donation at no cost to you. A Gift Aid declaration allows Weston Hospicecare to claim tax back on eligible donations. It means that for every £1 you donate to Weston Hospicecare we can claim back 25p, at no extra cost to you.

By ticking the "Yes" box, I agree I would like Weston Hospicecare to reclaim the tax on all qualifying donations I have made, as well as any future donations, until I notify them otherwise. I understand that if I pay less Income Tax and/or Capital Gains Tax than the amount of Gift Aid claimed on all my donations in that tax year I may be asked to pay any difference. I understand that Weston Hospicecare will reclaim 25p of tax on every £1 that I give.

    What is Gift Aid?

Gift Aid does not cost you a penny more, but can add an additional 25p to every £1 you donate. When Weston Hospicecare receives a donation from a UK taxpayer, we're entitled to claim an amount of tax (calculated at the basic rate of income tax in that year) paid on that donation. Once you have given your permission for us to do this on your behalf, there is no need for you to do anything else.

All that is required is that you must be a taxpayer and that would have paid or will pay sufficient Income and/or Capital Gains Tax to cover all the Gift Aid claimed on all your donations in that tax year. Please note that it is your responsibility to pay any difference.

The amount of tax we claim will be 25% of the total value of your donations in that tax year. Furthermore, if you are a higher taxpayer, you are also entitled to claim the difference between the basic rate which we will claim and the amount of tax you have actually paid. For further details on how you can do this, please contact your tax office. If your tax situation changes and your gifts will no longer be eligible for the Gift Aid scheme please contact us and we will amend your record accordingly.
