National Guardian - Freedom to speak up

Therapy owls flock to Jackson-Barstow House to see patients

July 3, 2023
Lauren Easterbrook

Patients, families, staff and volunteers were treated to a stunning display of beautiful owls at Jackson-Barstow House on Friday (30 June).

The birds, from Owl Enlightenment, have been hand reared and visited with their handlers.

Their presence can offer several key benefits including reducing blood pressure, improving perception of pain and stress levels.

The hospice are so grateful to the team at Owl Enlightenment for visiting completely free of charge.

Family Support Team Manager, Jen Wakefield says “We were delighted to welcome Michelle from Owl Enlightenment to the hospice on Friday. Michelle kindly donated her time and waived any fee in order to provide much needed owl therapy to hospice patients and their family members.

“On patient was so content with her time with Twiggy, the barn owl, she didn’t require any pain relieving medication for an additional hour.

“Thank you so much for your kindness and support Michelle, we hope to see you, and the owls again soon!”

As a charity, we rely solely on the kindness of our community to run.

Only 20% of our annual costs are covered by the government leaving our incredible community to raise the rest.

Experiences for patients, such as this, are the icing on the cake and are so appreciated by everyone involved.
