Weston Hospicecare has been named as the county’s leading charity of 2019 in the Somerset Business Awards.
The hospice was named Charity Of The Year during the annual Somerset Chamber Of Commerce showcase of the area’s finest companies and organisations.
The accolade has been heralded as especially fitting for the hospice this year, as it is celebrating its 30th anniversary.
It earned first place in a category which featured stiff competition from fellow finalists Arc, a Taunton-based homelessness charity, and Shepton Mallet charity fund manager Somerset Community Foundation.
The award was presented during a glamorous ceremony – the 15th awards night held by the chamber – hosted by Somerset County Cricket Club legend Peter Trego at the Winter Gardens in Weston.
Somerset Chamber chief executive Stephen Henagulph paid tribute to the quality of entries from across the county.
He said: “We were all blown away by the quality of the entries. It was fantastic to be able to honour winners and finalists from all corners of the county and from a wide range of sectors and industries.
“Thank you to everyone who entered the awards and thank you to our judges and sponsors who continue to make these the biggest and best business awards in Somerset.”
Afterwards, Weston Hospicecare’s chair of trustees Judi Driscoll congratulated all involved in helping the hospice to secure such prestigious recognition.
She said: “The award celebrates the fantastic work of charitable organisations. We all know our care is second to none and our staff and volunteers work tirelessly to achieve this.
“Winning this accolade also recognises not just how much money we raise or spend, but also how we use fundraising and the contribution of volunteers to make a significant difference.
“What a great way to mark our 30th anniversary.”
