Today, Friday 29 September, has been a momentous day in Weston Hospicecare’s 30 year plus history.
As announced this morning, work has been underway over the past few months to refurbish the day service facilities. Click here to read more.
Jen Wakefield, Day Services Manager, wrote in the special event programme…
“The new treatment rooms are already in good use, with physiotherapy outpatients being scheduled and clinical reviews by our doctor and nurse for Day Hospice patients.
“Enrichment activities have been introduced in the new setting, so far we’ve had live music from a local singer, an artist from Super Culture delivering a social creativity art session, owl therapy, live bingo with prizes and quizzes.
“The enrichment sessions are open to all, not just to Day Hospice patients. We have actively encouraged inpatients, family members and members of our local community to come in and take part.
“The dining area offers potential for evening activities, with a pub, quiz evening planned and a Christmas meal opportunity during December.
“We have relaunched the Fatigue and Breathlessness Group and plan to launch the neurological support group in 2024.
“We have started offering ‘No Barriers Here’ workshops – the workshops use arts and crafts to start the Advanced Care Planning discussions.
“These sessions run quarterly across three workshops of two hours each.
“The workshops cover:
• What is important to me as an
individual now?
• Where do I want to be when I die, who
do I want to be with me?
• What feels most important to me when
I think about the very end of my life?
• What do I want my funeral to look like?
• How would I like to be remembered?
“This information is then shared on our electronic system, helping to provide more joined up care for patients in the communitity and maximising the opportunity for them to remain at home for as long as they wish.
“Our longer term ambitions of Day Services include:
1) Increasing the availability of the
enrolled Day Service programme
2) To extend our service capacity to offer
weekend Day Service availability
3) To work with our local health providers
to best utilise the outpatient space
“On behalf of the Day Services team, thank you so much to all parties who have helped support this incredible project.
“Thank you,
“Jen Wakefield
Day Services Manager”
