A paramedic from Weston-super-Mare has swam the English Channel to raise money for Weston Hospicecare.
The charity provides palliative care to people with a life-limiting condition in Weston-super-Mare, North Somerset and Sedgemoor areas.
Darran Griffiths completed the swim in a time of 12 hours, 7 minutes and was accompanied by a pilot vessel, friends and family.
He says on his JustGiving page “I have been dreaming of swimming the English channel since witnessing my sister successfully complete it solo just over 25 years ago. She has been a massive inspiration to me and continues to coach me now.
“I was lucky enough to swim it with her two years later, both being part of a six person relay team.
“At first, the reason for booking my solo attempt was to keep me motivated to be fit and healthy.
“As a paramedic, shift work can really be hard on you and as we all know the last few years have been even harder again.
“Weston Hospicecare have both helped a friend and family members of friends lately and I have also come in contact with them in a professional capacity. I can not speak highly enough of their amazing work in the most difficult of circumstances.”
Darran has raised more than £3,150 so far for the hospice who rely on supporters to fund 80% of its annual operating costs.
Each year, it costs £4.5million to run the charity with less than 20% of funding coming from the government.
Everyone at the hospice is in complete awe of Darran’s efforts and wish to thank him for supporting us.
